Slate grey might be the default setting of Tokyo's skies, but every so often it produces some dynamic and photogenic weather patterns. Living on the 9th floor of the tallest building in the immediate area around it, I'm often treated to some great sunrises, sunsets and what have you. Sunsets can be seen from my main balcony in the back of my building, and sunrises can be seen from my smaller balcony in the front. A nice arrangement. The above and below photos are of sunsets. Can you tell the difference between a sunrise and a sunset? Hurricanes occasionally make it all the way to Tokyo. The below photo was taken the evening before the hurricane struck. Strange clouds were massing on the horizon. And this photo was taken the next morning, from the front of my apartment. The same hurricane had just passed by and the rain had stopped. I teach an 8:00 am class in Yokohama a couple times a week, so I have to wake up at 5:15 just to get there in time. Waking up that early is of course hell, but there is a small bonus of occasionally getting to watch beautiful sunrises. I wonder what the neighbors would say if they saw me out on the balcony in my underwear shooting pictures at 5:30 am?
